Advent Reflection: Less is More

Standard

The Lord said to Gideon: “You have too many soldiers with you for me to deliver Midian into their power, lest Israel vaunt itself against me and say, ‘My own power saved me.’ “

Judges 7:2

What can you do this Advent season to decrease the distractions and busy-ness, so you have time to wholeheartedly and joyfully prepare to celebrate Jesus’ incarnation?

Going Deeper

Read Judges 7:2-22.

Gideon gathered together 32,000 soldiers to rise up against the Midianites, who had been oppressing the Israelites for seven years, destroying their crops and livestock and leaving them destitute. But more is not always better. Before allowing Gideon to rise up against Midian, God reduced his army from 32,000 to 300. Gideon would dare to attack Midian with an army of 300 only if he trusted completely in God’s provision.

At this time of year, there is a tendency to strive for more—more decorations, more presents, more lights, more parties, more food. Does the push for more help us to focus on Christ, or does it distract us? This may be another area where less is more; where we can only focus on the reason for the season if we trust God instead of trying to do everything ourselves.

As you watch this video, think about how you can make more space for Christ in your life this Advent season.
