Advent Reflection 12/17/14
How did the town of Bethlehem prepare for the arrival of Jesus? Certainly the people living there were eagerly awaiting the savior promised by the Old Testament prophets. However, Jesus didn’t come as the triumphant warrior they expected, who would vanquish all of their enemies. He came as the child of a working-class couple. The people of Bethlehem didn’t recognize him, and so they did not make sure he had a decent place in which to enter this world.
What would happen if Jesus came, as he did 2,000 years ago, into your neighborhood, your school, your workplace, or your church? Do you recognize Jesus in the faces of the people on the fringes of society? The people you look down on? The people you try to avoid?

America, what will we miss while we are sleeping?
Will Jesus come again, and leave us slumbering where we lay?
America, will we go down in history
as a nation with no room for its king?
Will we be sleeping?
Pray that God would open your heart to recognize his presence in the most unexpected people and places.
Pray for your family, your church, your workplace, your city, and your country, that they would always have room for the King.
